i'll be 41 friday (20th) and i'm stuck in what is fashionable for my age in reference to hair and clothes. i am a stay home mom in the summer and i'm going into my sophmore year at college. i need help, i'm short, i'm a size 12 and i have long straight black hair, i try to keep up with the times, people usually guess my age about 35. please if you have real advice, let me know

That would look good on you, too. She puts a bit of mousse in it to add body and volume (her hair type is kind of thin). If you have thin hair, add mousse. But if you have thick hair, you don't need it. As for clothes, I don't know what stores you like, but my mom shops at places like JCPenny, Old Navy, The Gap, Kohl's, places like that. wow, that 1st comment was weird! lol, anyhow, i dont think i'll be much help, im only 14, but i'll give it a shot. um, idk, but dont do anything too young. i see 40ish women trying to dress like they are still in their 20s, and it looks rediculous(dont know how to spell that) OH! lol, theres a spell-check thingy on here! anyhow, yeah, that is my advice. not too young.

okay you are more than likely not going to like this answer but long hair does not always look so good after a certain age. unless you are super fit or thin. size 12 is average for the american woman therefore i would suggest seeing a senior (no reference to your age) stylist at a salon to tailor a cut for you. as for clothes (if you can afford it) I like to shop at nordstrom because their clothes are classy yet stylish and age appropriate for most. also if you are going this far stop in sephora and have them try on some make up for you, you may find what you are doing now is dated and dragging you down. good luck and happy birthday.

HI there! Well i'll start off by giving you a little background on myself to possibly give you a little more comfortability in our conversational topic. I am 21, my mother will be 41 in August. Like yourself she is stay at home mom, and I know how tough it can be to be thinking about yourself and your appearance when all that is important to you is your family and their well being. I typically will try to take my mom out every so often and get her a haircut, pedi/mani and some new clothes on occasion. Last time we went out she was concerned with looking "too hip." Well, I told her that if she feels comfortable in something, wear it. No one will see what you are wearing they will only see how confidently you wear it. You could try to go to Charlotte Russe. That store has really nice clothes up to size 14 I think. I work at a bar and I have this older (like 50 something) lady that comes in all the time wearing stuff that I would wear! I think its great. You might also try New York and CO for some more sophisticated looks, or Express even. Victorias Secret has some nice "go out" in tops that you can buy from the convenience of your living room! If it doesn't fit, send it back for another size. Experiment, new styles don't get found until someone has enough guts to try it out. Remember just because you are a mom doesn't mean that you have to dress like one! You could try a layered hair cut too...Good Luck!

Now don't overthink it and act like your twenty all over again. for the summer, tops, capris, jeans, nice blouses, or khaki pants. don't over think it just avoid trying to show too much skin like really short shorts or skirts. but everything else is okay. Remember clothes are only an appearance once people get to know the real you I'm sure they won't notice what your wearing. Unless it's really cute!! LOL

For clothes, just wear what is comfortable flattering to your figure and makes you feel good. Nice jeans or capris and cute tops. A soft skirt a slightly structured blouse, a cute sweater set and slacks. Whatever you like. Why do we all have to follow the herd when it comes to our appearance. Just do your own thing.

As far as your hair is concerned, it sounds beautiful, just leave it. If you like it, don't change it. And for heaven's sake, don't listen to haters who say that every woman over a certain age has to chop off her hair. That is nonsense. If you want to keep it long, but want a new look, try learning new braids or updos. A nice updo held with a beautiful clip is elegant, easy and quick.

well it truly depends on how far you are willing to go... for example do you want short or long hair?

Long hair: Long layers and soft highlights of a warm brown.

short hair: a nice bob kind of stacked in the back and a warm toner.

When it comes to clothes it is always great to wear something that is shape flatering. There is so much when it comes to clothes it is really hard to just throw one way to look. what ever you are the most comfortable in and you can always buy a magazine and startshopping from there.

I'm 36 and off to college this fall as well, so I understand.

Keep it simple. Avoid big hair, white pants, wild prints, goofy comment t-shirts or superbaggy jeans.

Capri pants and cargo pants are good. Light cotton shirts in shades of brown, khaki, and tan are also good.

It's not really so much about the clothes as it is the accessories. charm bracelets, hoop earrings, matching purse and shoes. Wear your hair short or up and back. A messy bun or half undone ponytail are the favorite hairstyles.

When my mom was about 51, she lost a whole bunch of weight and needed new clothes. She looks a lot younger than her age too - anyway, she bobbed her hair and started wearing my old clothes, or letting me pick out what I thought was cute :) She looked great!

Dressing like a teenager was no problem - or like how I dressed as a teenager anyway. I think some of the edgier stuff wouldn't be so good, like shirts with writing all over them, or fake sports team lettering, or ripped and bleached jeans. But things like low-rise bootcuts, solid-color shirts, any kind of cute jacket - it looked great! In me and my mom's case, the clothes were mostly Gap, Express, some Old Navy. Anything classy and subdued.

BTW, if you can, wait until August to go shopping, especially for jeans. American Eagle jeans (which are a bit more teen-specific than Gap and others; they've usually got patterned backs) go $10 off, and Express (awesome jeans!) go down to $30 for back-to-school... waaay cheaper; don't buy them any other time. They're awesome if you're curvy too.

First of all, DON'T shop in the Junior's section! You really want to look hip and trendy, then go for darker jeans, but not the strecht ones! You are petite so don't wear big prints in your clothes. You will be always right with a good jacket and a some cami or t/shirt for the layered look. Dont wear birkenstocks for God's sake, there are pretty comfortable flat ballerina shoes or colored sneakers. As for you hair, you are very petite for such a long hair. I may suggest you cut it into a funky new bob style or a layered cut (no longer than your shoulders). But the most importan thing is ATTITUDE! Good Luck and happy birthday!

Personally, I am all for doing what you want to do, with your personal appearance. If you take a look at my avatar, this is an acurate description of the way I look. I have long, soft hair and I dress the way I feel. This usually means blue jeans and t-shirts. I have people tell me, I need a style change. If I did that, I would be unhappy and what good would that do? So, I suggest you follow your heart, and like the song says, "Do what ya want to do..." By the way, I will be 51 years old, in November.
